Why we use social media applications? General reason – to communicate with each other. Same way as we communicate with each other “face-to-face” – lets remember about few general rules of social media/online savoir-vivre.
Here are 7 rules good to remember before you press the share/publish/post button:
- “Twitter is a great place to tell the world what you’re thinking before you have a chance to think about it” /Chris Pirillo/. So maybe it would be good (just in case) first think what you want to say before you say it.
- it’s forever – the moment you publish/share something online, it’s there forever (even if you delete that – it’s still somewhere there online)
- “I like to say that Twitter is like a bar, Facebook is your living room and Linkedin is the local chamber of commerce” /BSSStoltz/
- “Don’t say anything online that you wouldn’t want plastered on a billboard with your face on it.” /Erin Bury/. We are not anonymous online.
- “Social media changes the relationship between companies and customers from master and servant, to peer to peer” /Jay Baer/. Don’t be afraid and contact your favorite (or not) brand and ask questions.
- “NEVER USE ALL CAPSLOCK – in tweets or Facebook” – using capslock is consider as shouting.
- Don’t use to many hashtags (#) in one tweet. There is 140 characters in a tweet, use them wisely.
Here’s a youtube video on Dos and Don’ts when using social networks:
Social Media is for everyone, so don’t worry – you can use all those applications as well. It’s good to remember that we are not anonymous online and that whatever we publish will stay online forever. That being said, lets remember to be nice to each other online and follow few basic privacy rules.
What would you add to this list? What are your social media rules?
Good stuff. Always be sure to RT others or share others status updates and comment on them. Show you are interested, and be positive and inspiring, never complain. I could go on. But very good!
msmir thank you Miriam for your comment. I absolutely agree with you – interaction (by responding, commenting, etc.) – very important.
Great Tips.. However I do have a different opinion on CAPS… I know most think it is shouting and if you Study NLP, HYPNO and other things… CAPS also has a place for putting an EMPHASIS on something… I never take it as SHOUTING… LOL… Lots of Love and Happy Holidays and… Thanks for the tips…
CarlyAlyssaThorne Thank you Carly for your comment ๐ I agree that if you use CAPS just to put an emphasis on some parts of the text – that’s ok but if you use CAPS in 100% of your text – then it’s just too much ๐ Have a great Holidays and see you soon
Great article, and I do agree with Carly in that sometimes caps are needed. ย Thank you for the great tips!!!!
