I usually talk about technology and social media for older adults (in this case people 65 & better) but this time I’d like to share with you something that not many people what to talk about…loneliness during the holiday season.
Holiday season is not always a cheerful time, there are people who are struggling during that time of the year. So next time when you think about how awesome it is to enjoy Hanukkah or Christmas don’t forget about those who are alone, especially older adults.
I’m not saying you have to do a lot, the truth is that sometimes small act of kindness is what counts the most.
- Visit your neighbor. Have a conversation. Ask if he/she doesn’t need help with shopping, etc.
- If first option doesn’t work or you don’t want to scare your neighbor then maybe going to the local senior center might be option for you. Check online or call your City Hall for more information.
- You can try and contact your local AARP chapter and ask if they need volunteers for holidays.
- Ask. Just ask your friends, your parents, people you know if they know some older adults that are going to be alone for holidays.
- Connect with people on social media. If you know that your friend is spending that time alone, make sure to chat with them online.
This year (same as last year) I’m going to try and reach on social media those who are lonely during this holiday time. I noticed that not many people are using hashtag #AloneOnXmas so I decided to use that one to connect with people on social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram). You ask what good that might do? Simple thing: let’s talk, share stories and not feel lonely.
This time of the year is not easy for those who are feeling lonely. I get it that not everyone who is spending this time alone is lonely but let’s make sure that those who feel lonel are not alone.
